A fire has broken out at a landfill in the popular holiday destination Lanzarote, Spain.
It started after 7pm on Monday evening at the Zonzamas environmental complex, near Costa Teguise, and photos from the scene show fire and smoke coming from the area.
The fire then quickly spread to other parts of the complex before emergency services were called.
The Government of the Canary Islands has activated the Territorial Emergency Plan for Civil Protection, according to the Canarian weekly.
This means that people are urged to stay away from the landfill for safety reasons.
Residents in the area have also been told to close doors and windows and not go outside as a precaution against smoke inhalation.
Firefighters are also trying to extinguish the fire from the air this morning with helicopters.
Fire and volunteer firefighters were called from the island's main fire station and the airport fire station.
It appears that the fire broke out in a part of the site where there is discarded furniture, inventory and garden waste.
It is also believed that the fire destroyed a shredding machine worth a large amount of money.
Enrique Espinosa, head of emergency services, said: 'The problem is that the only way to extinguish these types of fires is with excavators and sand, but the smoke is so intense that we have to wait.
“This will take some time.”
