Kiwi Lydia Ko might want to get a trowel to bury her scorecard after what happened in the final round of the Women’s PGA Championship in Maryland.

While Australian golf star Minjee Lee caught the spotlight to take the clubhouse’s lead in an exciting climax after the tournament at the Congressional Country Club’s Blue Course in Bethesda, Ko was back in the clubhouse to determine what went wrong.

Ko, who was plagued by a stiff right forearm the previous day, carded a seven-over 79 in the fourth round to finish the tournament tied for 46th place (NZT) on Monday.

It ended a miserable few days for Ko. After drawing for a second header in the third day, she dropped to the leaderboard after charting four-over 76 leaving her a share of 12th, one below the map at the tournament.

Meanwhile, in a brave bid for rugby majors, Lee fired a final round two under-par 70 to set the target at four under-target.

Lee shared second with the runner-up in the third round, In Gee Chun, with American Lexi Thompson two strokes ahead with three holes to play.

After starting six shots back, Lee fell further behind with bogeys on her first two holes.

But the recently crowned U.S. Women’s Open champion grabbed four birdies in 12 holes to briefly narrow the gap to one hold on Thompson.

A bogey on the 17th seemed to have squandered the world’s No.3 chances when Thompson made a birdie on the 15th to open a three-stroke buffer.

But a birdie at last for Lee piled up the pressure on Thompson late in her round.

Meanwhile, fellow New Zealander Ryan Fox finished third in BMW International after shooting a respectable five-under 67 in the final round of the tournament in Munich, Germany.

Fox credited his accurate short game for keeping him in contention after struggling with illness over the weekend.

Fox jumped back from 71 the previous day to finish behind the eventual winner of China’s Haotong Li and second-placed Thomas Pieters of Belgium.
