More than 20 flights scheduled to depart or arrive at Christchurch airport were delayed or canceled on Wednesday morning.

It comes when the city awoke to a blanket of icy fog.

It’s not yet confirmed whether the flights were specifically affected by the weather, but MetService meteorologist Jessie Owen said it was “very foggy” at the airport, with temperatures reaching 1C.

After two days of snow and heavy rain warnings, calmer weather is on the horizon for most of the rest of the South Island on Wednesday.

But it can’t be long, as MetService warns of a burst of rain for much of the South Island starting Thursday.

More snow could also fall from late Thursday and early Friday up to 400 or 500 meters in parts of the south and east of the South Island, likely affecting the higher roads and passes.
