Flights to Auckland delayed due to damaged runway lighting

An airplane landing on Auckland International Airport damaged several runway lights, causing major delays.

A statement from the airport said damage to runway lighting “impacted” international departures and major domestic flights. A number of flights were delayed and diverted Friday afternoon and evening.

“Our operations teams have cleared the debris and are now assessing the damage.

“We apologize to all affected travelers. Check with your airline or check your travel app when traveling for flight cancellations or delays.

Grant Baber and his family were on their way home to Palmerston North when Air New Zealand canceled two flights.

The family of five will now spend the night with a cousin.

“There is water centimeters deep on the asphalt.”

Baber said there were also puddles on the floor in the terminal building.

The torrential rain has led to desperate scenes in West Auckland as flash flooding caused widespread chaos.

“Is this a super city. I don’t feel the super.”

He said the line outside Air New Zealand to rebook flights is about 500 meters long, but it appeared there were no flights left tonight.
