Rangers’ iconic goalkeeper Andy Goram died at the age of 58 after a short battle with cancer.

Former Manchester United goalkeeper announced in April that he had esophageal cancer and declined chemotherapy. That is because it only extends his lifespan by three months.

The Rangers statement said:

“Today, the thoughts of directors, management, players and staff are with Andy’s family and we demand that their privacy be respected during this sad time. Details of the funeral will be announced in due course.”

Born in Berry, Gollum began his career in Oldham and moved north from 1987 to 1991 to play for the Hibernian. He played 260 times in the Rangers between 1991 and 1998, simply called “Goalley” and won five league titles and three Scottish Cups. He has a cup and two league cups. He won 43 caps in Scotland and was their first-choice goalkeeper in both Euro 92 and Euro 96.

After the Rangers, I played for Notts County, Sheffield United, Motherwell, Manchester United, Hamilton, Coventry, Oldham, South Queen and Elgin. Gollum is part of the 2001 Premier League champion Manchester United team and has made two appearances in the Red Devils.
