A former White House staffer has shared a text message reportedly sent by Melania Trump, wife of Donald Trump, in which she declined to call on Capitol rioters to stop all violence.
Stephanie Grisham, a staunch Trump loyalist who served as the former president’s press secretary and Mrs. Trump’s chief of staff, resigned within hours of the text exchange on Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of Trump supporters stormed the seat of Congress to claim his election undo loss.
“Would you like to tweet that peaceful protests are the right of every American, but there is no place for lawlessness and violence?” Mrs Grisham is said to have asked the First Lady.
“No,” was the answer.
Mrs Grisham previously described the message in her memoir I will answer your questions now last year, but did not share the lyrics itself.
At the time, Ms. Trump said, “The intent behind this book is clear. It is an attempt to redeem itself after a poor performance as a press secretary, failed personal relationships and unprofessional behavior at the White House. Through falsehood and betrayal, she is trying to gain relevance and money at the expense of Mrs. Trump.”
Mrs. Trump’s office has been asked for comment.
Grisham’s revelation comes as the congressional committee investigating the attack on the Capitol is broadcasting live testimonies of former Trump associates making damning claims about the former president’s role in the riots.
Thousands of supporters, including organized militias like the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers, were torched by Trump during a rally and then stormed the Capitol where the Senate formally endorsed Trump’s defeat by Biden.
On Tuesday, Cassidy Hutchinson, a former aide to Mr Trump’s chief of staff Mark Meadows, told the committee that another staffer had seen Mr Trump try to grab the wheel of his presidential limousine and even assaulted a Secret Service agent. when he was told he would not be taken to the Capitol.
‘I’m the damn president! Take me to the Capitol now,” Trump is said to have yelled.
She also testified that she heard Trump say something along the lines of: “I don’t care if they have guns. They are not here to hurt me. take the f***ing [metal detectors] away.”
