Former Rangers goalkeeper Andy Goram has died after a brief battle with cancer, the club has announced.

Goram, 58, who also represented Scotland, played for Ibrox between 1991 and 1998. He played 260 games during that period and won five league titles, three Scottish Cups and two League Cups.

Born in Bury, Goram began his career with Oldham Athletic before moving north to play for Hibernian in Edinburgh and then moving to Glasgow.

After his time at Rangers he played for a number of teams in both Scotland and England including Notts County, Sheffield United, Motherwell for three seasons, Manchester United, Coventry, Queen of the South and finally Elgin City.

A statement on the Rangers FC website said the club was “deeply saddened to announce the death of our legendary goalkeeper Andy Goram after a brief battle with cancer”.

In tribute to Goram, the club said: “He is a member of the Scottish Football Hall of Fame and was named both the Scottish PFA and Football Writers’ Player of the Year in 1992-93 – arguably the strongest campaign in the history of England. rangers.

“Goram also won international caps for Scotland as a cricketer and remains the only person to have played both a first-class international cricket match and a major international football match for Scotland.”

It concluded: “The thoughts of the directors, management, players and staff are with Andy’s family today and ask that their privacy be respected during this sad time.

“The details of the funeral will be communicated in due course.”

Former Manchester United and England player Gary Neville wrote on Twitter: “Terribly sad news about Andy Goram. RIP Andy. Love to all your family.”

Steve Archibald, who played alongside Goram at Hibernian, wrote: “RIP my dear friend Andy Goram (the goalkeeper).

“Lightning reflexes, and always gave me maximum confidence to have him in the goal, just had to marvel at a lot of [the] saves he made to keep us in the game.

“Much love and my sincere condolences to Andy’s entire family.”

Scotland’s first minister paid tribute to “one of Scotland’s greatest football greats”.

Nicola Sturgeon wrote: “This is such terribly sad news. Andy Goram was one of Scotland’s football greats of all time.

“Gone way too early. My condolences to his loved ones.”

Sports broadcaster Jim Spence said Goram was “one of the best goalkeepers I’ve ever seen”, adding: “Didn’t disappear at any age.”

Chris Sutton, former Celtic player, said: “Really sad news to hear of the passing of Andy Goram. Taken far too young. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family.”
