Investor of Epic Games Disney creates excitement for his future Avengers films with a new Fortnite season with Miracle's new supervillain, Doctor Doom.
The update, ominously named Absolute Doom, arrived this morning (August 16) after a multi-hour downtime during which Fortnite was unplayable.
Curious about what's changed? Here are all the major new features awaiting players in Fortnite Chapter 5, Season 4.
A new season of Fortnite means a new Battle Pass, which players can purchase for 950 V-Bucks, or approximately £7.
Completing the game will give you the chance to earn 1,500 V-Bucks, which you can spend on other digital goods in the Fortnite Shop.
Emma Frost could be your new crush
Epic Games
In keeping with this season’s Marvel theme, the new Battle Pass includes a bunch of superhero and supervillain outfits, along with a few outfits based on original characters from Fortnite.
Some examples include Gwenpool (instantly unlocked); Iron Man's sidekick War Machine; Peelverine (think Logan, but a banana); Emma Frost; Captain Jones, a Steve Rogers lookalike; Spider-Man's fishbowl-headed foe Mysterio; and the current Black Panther, Shuri.
Get ready for new experiences on Fortnite Island, as Dr. Doom enters the game with an army of Latvian immigrants in tow.
Castle Doom on Fortnite Island
Epic Games
He plans his takeover from the shadow of Castle Doom, a towering monument with its own glowing furnace.
Doom can be found working his ass off in the gaudy building (which seems fit for a Disney princess, not mad scientist) as he forms his new impenetrable armor.
Nearby stands a terrifying statue of the steely megalomaniac and a little further on an entire village full of oppressed citizens.
The Raft Prison houses supervillains and evil ETs
Epic Games
The presence of a crumbling Fantastic Four shield protruding from the ground suggests that this season could be full of Marvel Easter eggs.
Elsewhere, Doom has established a prison called The Raft, which serves as a breeding ground for like-minded supervillains and dangerous aliens.
As players explore the map, they will encounter the deranged tyrant's minions, and once defeated, they can transform into allies.
New and returning weapons
Marvel's foul-mouthed antihero Deadpool loves nothing more than to whip out a pair of pistols, and that's no different for Gwenpool and her Dual Micro SMGs. Track her down to get the cool, mythical pink versions of the bullet-shooting pistols.
War Machine is sure to become a fan favorite
Epic Games
War Machine's arsenal just got better, with the addition of Hover Jets that let you fly, while Auto Turrets let you mow down enemies.
For some traditional firepower, there's the Monarch Pistol, complete with a mythic version that you can grab from a Doombot in the castle, along with the Siphon Medallion which grants a health and shield boost to felled players.
Finally, there’s the Sovereign Shotgun for those who like to aim down the sights for more accuracy. Defeating Mysterio in the Doomstadt village will not only unlock a mythic version of the weapon, but also grant you an invisibility-inducing Stealth Medallion.
The weapons and items returning this season include:
- Captain America's shield
- The Arcane Gloves of Doom
- Striker Burst Rifle
- Striker Assault Rifle
- Combat Assault Rifle
- Ranger pistol
- Hammer Pump Shotgun
- Gatekeeper Shotgun
- Hyper SMG
- Shockwave grenade.
What is the download size of the update?
Developer Epic Games has indicated that the download size for the latest Fortnite update will be larger than normal due to adjustments the company has made to the game.
These are the file sizes players are reporting for Absolute Doom:
-
PC: 46.8 GB
-
Xbox: 38.70 GB
-
PlayStation: 30.49 GB
On Xbox, there has been some concern recently about the increasing update sizes, with bloated downloads taking up more space on players’ already overloaded consoles. Some have cited previous update sizes of around 88.45GB for Xbox.
Fortnite Festival has a new playable concert
Battle Royale isn't the only Fortnite mode getting an overhaul. A new season of the Guitar Hero-style Fortnite Festival has also kicked off, featuring Grammy winner Karol G as the headliner.
