San Diego (AP) — Four of the five former U.S. Navy officers were convicted of plots, bribes, and fraud as part of a “fat Leonard” corruption scandal.

The five were the last of the 34 defendants to be tried on suspicion of being acquired by Malaysian defense contractor Leonard Francis.

A federal jury convicted the former captain. David Newland, James Dolan, David Lausman, former Cmdr. Mario Herrera, a conspiracy to commit bribes, receive bribes and commit wire fraud in good faith, has been announced by a US law firm.

The jury was stuck and did not reach a verdict on the indictment of the fifth defendant, Maj. Gen. Bruce Loveless.

The case is centered around Francis, who admitted in 2015 that he provided naval officers with a $ 500,000 child. In exchange, the officer gave him sensitive information and even redirected the military vessel to a port in favor of a Singapore-based shipping service company.

Prosecutors say Francis and his company have overcharged the US military for more than $ 35 million for its services.

Francis, who will be sentenced to prison in July, has worked with the US Department of Justice since his arrest in 2013.
