Students at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery will help you test your free Wi-Fi service in central Christchurch.

Visitors to downtown Christchurch will be able to enjoy free Wi-Fi from Monday.

Free services provided by Christchurch City Council and its fiber broadband provider Enable are available in an area near Armagh St, Lichfield St, Colombo St and Cambridge Tce.

Johnathan Eele, CEO of Enable, said Enable invested in the project because access to high-quality free Wi-Fi services was important for smart cities in the 21st century.

He said free Wi-Fi would not only bring a high level of economic benefit to Christchurch, but also a real benefit to locals and visitors.

“Locals and visitors can enjoy a free connection while exploring much of what our central city offers.”

Dawn Baxendale, CEO of the Council, said the opening of the border to all travelers next month is a great opportunity to launch a free service.

Fiber broadband providers Enable and Christchurch City Council have launched free Wi-Fi services in the city centre.

“We hope that the city center will be crowded with visitors, fast, reliable and free internet access will be a big bonus.”

There are some gaps in map coverage, such as in the middle of the Cassel Mall.

Coverage focused on local areas and high-visit areas, but also needed to consider where network equipment could be installed, according to Enable. Enable has devices installed at both ends of the Cashel Mall and continues to improve the reach of that area.

The students were another group who wanted Enable to benefit from free Wi-Fi.

“We expect students to take full advantage of this new free service,” Eele said.

Students of choice can use this service to learn, create content, and connect with friends, family, and the world when they visit the city.

Approximately 60 students at Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery, an urban school, helped enable network testing before launch.

The test was a huge success and helped Enable prepare for launch, Eele said.

Anita Yarwood, director of Ao Tawhiti Unlimited Discovery, said the availability of free Wi-Fi is another reason to make Christchurch center a great place for students.

“We are confident that our students and their Whānau will make the most of this service.”
