Gabriel Martinelli has detailed how he convinced Brazilian team-mate Gabriel Jesus to join Arsenal this summer.

The Gunners agreed a £45m deal with Manchester City to draw Jesus, which was one of the main goals of the club.

The 25-year-old teamed up with Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta at the Etihad Stadium, where he helped City win four Premier League titles.

Jesus quickly settled in with the Gunners, scoring a handful of goals in preseason and now shows all his many qualities on and off the ball.

Arsenal also brought fellow Brazilian Marquinhos out of Sao Paulo and joined compatriots Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes in the first team.

Talking to Gunners Legend Ian Wright About His Wrighty’s House podcastMartinelli told how he and centre-back Gabriel constantly urged Jesus to contact them at the Emirates Stadium.

‘I was in the national team’ [saying] every day, “Gabi, you are already my teammate, come to us, we need you [at Arsenal]’ said the winger.

‘To chatter [Gabriel] also, great Gabi [was urging Jesus to join].’

Martinelli has made an impressive rise since signing for the Gunners from Brazil’s Ituano in 2019.

Last season, however, the 21-year-old was often on the bench in the early parts of the season, which he said made him “sad”.

‘I got sad. I want to play, if you don’t want to play, you’re in the wrong job,” he added.

‘I didn’t give up, I always tried.

“When I played 5, 30 or 45 minutes, I always did my best.”
