Can Game Pass Influence You To Play Fewer Games? (photo: Microsoft)

The Tuesday letters page has some Monster Hunter Sunbreak in the summer sun, while a reader dreams of an Xbox/PlayStation crossover console.

Everything and nothing
The Xbox Series X has been transformative. The most powerful piece of computer hardware I’ve ever owned, the console I’ve played the most (and I’ve had them all), and yet this console, along with Game Pass, has all the interest in modern gaming for me.

It starts in the shopping street. I’m browsing the shelves, looking for a game to buy, when I see games for £50 that I know I have at home on Game Pass. It makes me ask, what am I? shop in front of? I should go home and play the 90 Game Pass titles I didn’t watch. But I go home and play the same handful of games. It’s like loading Netflix, surfing for 10 minutes and then turning Fawlty Towers back on.

Game Pass offers so much choice that I don’t feel like it, so I fly into Flight Sim for 15 minutes before loading Netflix. I’m looking forward to the end of Better Call Saul more than any other game. My console has become a video player.

I don’t understand why having Game Pass, a real bargain that puts over 100 games at your fingertips, has sparked such apathy. But the anticipation of a new release followed by the purchase of a disc on launch day feels so real and tangible to me, and for whatever reason, the incredible choice on offer has left me staring at a long list.

If I install one, it has five minutes to grab my attention, or I try something else. It ruined it. If games cost £50, buy one and play it. When you have them all, you barely play anything.

Out of the game
Maybe it’s just me, but the idea of The Last of Us Part 1 being a money grabber is the least of my worries with it. Obviously Sony wants it to make money, but as GC said, the main reason is that it’s related to the TV show. What upsets me, and I think a significant number of fans, is that it takes up so much of Naughty Dog’s time. That and some stupid live service game that nobody wants.

That won’t be out until at least next year, which means it will definitely be ages before we see anything of a ‘real’ new game. That to me is the real shame of it all, that one of the world’s best developers is sidelining himself for so long. The Last Of Us Part 2 was 2020 and this means we won’t get a major new game from it until 2024 at the earliest, and probably a few years after that.

They can take all the money they want as long as it’s not mine, I just want them to make something new and what they’re known for.

Bless us with blood
I never wanted to believe a rumor more than the rumor about Bloodborne has no remaster or remake of any kind† But if it’s true, and you should say it looks like this, why not a patch? It just doesn’t make sense to have neither. Unfortunately, the suggestion that Sony and From have been arguing seems all too believable because I can’t believe they wouldn’t do anything to boost the game.

Most people who buy a PlayStation 5 have probably never heard of Bloodborne and Sony does nothing to promote it or encourage them to try it. I’d say it was somewhat understandable given that pre-Elden Ring most of the stuff from From was considered pretty niche, but Sony did a remake of Demon’s Souls. For the launch of their no console, no less!
Whatever’s going on, I hope Sony gets things sorted soon and that old blood can become the new blood again.

Everyone was patronized
Interesting Reader function from Cornball RE: easy mode. They find it condescending to have an easy mode in games, I found their whole attitude towards it patronizing.

The point of gaming is, for me and I’m sure many others, have an enjoyable experience. It doesn’t matter whether you enjoy playing a game on the easiest or most extreme difficulty. All that matters is to enjoy.

I would also argue that sales figures don’t prove at all that people like difficult games. It proves that they are willing to give them a shot, provided they are the most hyped game of the year. I would like to see the numbers of how many it has completed.

Semi Pro
I’m not a pro gamer, but last night I got the platinum for Elden Ring and it gave me a chance to think about it. Three full playthroughs and some great moments. The Land of the Giants is breathtaking in its magnitude, I love that it’s all connected with giant chains to run across and the area boss is one of the most memorable.

But my actual favorite place is very small… The Cave of Loss. It is a different design from all the other caves and opens onto a beautiful frozen lake where you can see the jellyfish below.

Star Wars Hardware
After reading the Reader’s Feature About Xbox Buying PlayStation I don’t agree at all. Just say Xbox bought PlayStation, Xbox can charge what they want. Take Netflix vs Amazon Prime and all the streaming services out there, because there are a few that keep prices in line – meaning they don’t charge the Earth for their services.

It would be the same for consoles if Xbox, or even PlayStation, would buy out the other. There would only be companies for gaming, the other would be Nintendo. So Xbox could charge at least double that for every service they provided. Competition laws are there for a reason and it is true that consumers pay a fair price for a fair service.

Frankly, they’d be better off doing a console together, then it’s a 50/50 split and you get all the games, but that’s not going to happen. Sony thinks they’re unstoppable and Xbox says, “Okay, wait for Sony.” The gloves are off, maybe in a galaxy far, far away there’s a PlayStation/Xbox console, but in this one you choose your side

cheap money
This has already been mentioned in the Underbox by Simundo, but you can get a digital copy of God Of War Ragnarök for £60.46 (!) by purchasing a £20 PSN code and £50 PSN code from ShopTo as the PSN vouchers are discounted.

Or you can buy a £70 game from PlayStation Store for £60.46 using this trick. Here is the PSN vouchers

PS: PlayStation 5 console disc version is currently in stock on ShopTo (Monday afternoon).

happy summer
I hope everyone in the UK enjoyed this great weather. Ironically, feeling the need to be in the sun is the only thing that took me away from Monster Hunter Sunbreak. As a big fan of the series, this expansion feels like it tackles all the minor issues I had with Rise: the forced Rampage missions and how easy the main storyline was to complete, especially with a party of four.

The new monsters are awesome and the changes to each weapon really open up new gameplay options. Hopefully the promised additional content will keep me busy for many months to come.

My favorite addition is the tracking missions, which add what solo players have been sorely lacking in the game, and I agree it would have been good to include them in the multiplayer quests.

For what is turning out to be a pretty dry season of games across all platforms, I’m really happy with the recent Switch releases and the Switch is definitely my go-to console while Microsoft and Sony really need to ramp up their release schedule.

To the GC community, I hope you all have a good summer whatever you’re playing right now.

Inbox is running too
Now that it’s summer and temperatures are rising, are you playing fewer video games than ever before?
WITCHCRAFT

I think there should be more games around the water. The ones I know from Wave Race to Subnautica are all great and the graphics have gotten really good at waves lately. And no, Skull And Bones is not what I had in mind.

This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Campbell, who asks which upcoming game are you most looking forward to?

We’re just halfway through the year and the few non-E3 preview events that were there have all been done, so which upcoming game are you most excited about right now, whether it’s coming out this year or not?

As long as the game is officially announced, you can talk about anything you want, but do explain why it captures your imagination and what else you want to know about it before it’s released.

What are you most looking forward to in the second half of 2022 and how do you feel about the smaller number of releases compared to previous years?
