Elden Ring – what was your favorite location? (photo: Bandai Namco)

The Monday Letters page is having trouble believing the latest Switch Pro rumors, as a reader fails to see the appeal of Skull And Bones.

Postcards from the country in between
I just hit Elden Ring and, like everyone else, I’m amazed at what a great game it is. I really want to cover some of my favorite parts, but of course I can’t because of spoilers. I’m curious though, what’s everyone’s favorite area?

I think most would agree that the latter is a bit of a let down but my favorites get stuck between Leyndell, Royal Capital and Caelid. Celid is the closest thing to Bloodborne’s horror tones and is really stuffy all the time; disgusting also with its pustules and venoms, and terribly mutated animals. The music is also really awful, in a good way, and way more distinctive than anywhere else.

I think the capital is my favorite. Even the build up to it, with the huge battlefield is amazing, but when you come in and realize how big it is, and that you can go anywhere, it’s unbelievable. All this and it still has all the complexity of previous From games and some very unexpected shortcuts.

The whole game is a fantastic achievement and although I’m about to start New Game+ now, I’m hoping for a DLC announcement soon as I already want more.

It happens again
Looks like we’re just going around in circles with all these Switch Pro rumors. They were convincing before and nothing ever came of it. These new ones also seem pretty believable, but why are they more likely to be true?

The only somewhat compelling evidence is how little Nintendo has planned outside of Zelda, but since Nintendo is who they are, I don’t think that’s enough to say they need more hardware. They were just as secretive in the past for no reason and this just might be that. Especially considering how badly their development has been affected by the pandemic.

I’m not saying the Switch Pro isn’t going through, but this is a rumor I won’t believe unless I see hard evidence, and since this never happens with Nintendo, I’m just waiting and expecting nothing.

Bring a friend
If anyone wants to help new players or players who hit a wall in Elden Ring, they can. It doesn’t matter what level you are on because the game lowers your level to the level the calling player is at. As long as your summoner has a decent weapon level, yours will be about the same. It will not affect your magic as you should be able to continue using your spells.

I would also recommend the Jellyfish as it is tanky as hell and toxic to most bosses. Dragon rot breathing is also a huge help and melts many enemies’ health bars. One last thing, if you’ve been to Volcano Manor and made enough progress, Bernthal will be doing the Godskin Duo more or less solo.

no hype
Why am I hyped for almost no game these days and are the reveals of new projects or trailers boring or just food? I understand that a game like God Of War Ragnarök will be received with a lot of fanfare, but I don’t see Sony mass marketing this project and that is absolutely strange.

Several remakes, such as The Last Of Us Part 1, which doesn’t serve as a major improvement and retails for £70. Starfield has been shown and it looks awful on Bethesda’s dated engine and I’m a big fan of Skyrim, minus those damn spiders. But it seems to be divisive, for lack of a better word. But I honestly don’t even care about any of these new releases and it seems to me that aside from Ragnarök, Sony doesn’t really have anything interesting and neither does Xbox.

Elden Ring is great for the fans and the community, but it’s not as good as Bloodborne and it’s vastly overrated. It just doesn’t click and I’ve had a better time with the Demon’s Souls remake. Maybe 2023 will be a great year for gaming, but 2022 was definitely one of the worst years in gaming.

No more monopoly
I couldn’t disagree more with the Reader function about Microsoft buying Sony. This would create an effective monopoly in the AAA console space. Microsoft could price at any level they wanted, implement any level of DRM, as they wanted at the beginning of the last generation.

There would be no competitor to challenge them in that market segment while the Switch really does its own thing. It would be the worst thing that could happen to us as consumers. I’d even go so far as to say I’d love to see the Activision deal blocked in the US and set a precedent that no platform holder can ever buy an entire publisher. I’m becoming a fan of our boxes, but we should be more focused on our rights as consumers.

Together again
Interested to see both Terminator and RoboCop that new games are coming out. It’s sad to see such huge franchises reduced to low budget rates like this one, but if the people involved are fans and can spin a good yarn then I’m interested.

It seems to me that both series have done quite well in the video game field over the years, and unlike most movies, they have more good than bad. I’m a little surprised there wasn’t a game based on the first Terminator at the time, but RoboCop was turned into a game right away – in fact, I’d say the coin’s popularity was a good way to cement the pop culture credentials of the series.

For Terminator, I think my dream game would actually be Alien Isolation, but with robots. The problem with that is I don’t know how you’d make that work if it were in the modern day (or the 80’s!)

RoboCop, I think it would be better as an open world game where you are literally just a cop and a bigger story starts to come out as you solve common crimes. I don’t know if this new game will have such scope though, because you’ll probably need a pretty big budget to make that work.

Oh, and it’s clear that both dream games would evolve into the ultimate crossover: RoboCop vs Terminator!

friend forever
The kickstarter for the Amiga documentary Episode 1 successfully raised £64,377 on Sunday morning. The Kickstarter goal was £20,000, so they’ve far surpassed it!

They also completed all the stretch goals, which doesn’t always happen on every Kickstarter. Look forward to my physical copy.

single focus
Shocking as it is to fans, I have to say I was happy to hear that Rockstar is phasing out support for Red Dead Online and canceling or at least postponing plans for even more remasters. In other words, they’re finally getting into gear for GTA 6.

It shows you that even a giant company like Rockstar has limits and it’s clear that these other projects became a distraction and had to be put aside. This is why I think the concerns that Naughty Dog currently has too many projects are justified, especially when no one wants the remake or multiplayer games in the first place.

I think a lot of people underestimate the time a big game takes to make these days. Five years is now a bare minimum and I’m sure GTA 6 will eventually be 10 years when all is said and done. The Elder Scrolls 6 too, based on when they announced it. I think some developers even underestimate how things are going. Five years is a long time in someone’s life and you start adding delays and suddenly you’re talking about the best part of a decade.

I have no doubt that GTA 6 will be worth the wait, but part of me regrets the cost of it all, in the sense that Rockstar can’t make anything else. Let alone remasters, there are no table tennis games or The Warriors tie-ins, no Max Payne 4 – nothing. I can only hope that the remasters and Red Dead Online may have been sidelined to allow for another non-GTA game, but I’m not very hopeful.

Inbox is running too
Is anyone excited about Skull And Bones? Every time I hear it, it just sounds like a more boring version of Sea Of Thieves. And now it doesn’t even have foot battles?!

I’m not sure if I believe EA wanted to keep Skate 4 a secret. I think they wanted the alpha testers to leak the footage to spark interest. It worked, I’m curious.

This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Campbell, who asks which upcoming game are you most looking forward to?

We’re just halfway through the year and the few non-E3 preview events that were there have all been done, so which upcoming game are you most excited about right now, whether it’s coming out this year or not?

As long as the game is officially announced, you can talk about anything you want, but do explain why it captures your imagination and what else you want to know about it before it’s released.

What are you most looking forward to in the second half of 2022 and how do you feel about the smaller number of releases compared to previous years?
