Tomb Raider – can it get to PS Plus Premium? (photo: Square Enix)

The Monday newsletter is not excited about the thought of a Red Dead Redemption remaster, as one reader falls in love with Into The Breach.

more to eat
So PS Plus Premium is out now and it clearly has some issues, the most obvious being that there are not that many games. I’m sure they’re coming though, so I’m curious to know what retro games others are hoping for? I would love to see more PlayStation 1 and 2 games, it would be great if they could get all the classics there, including Tomb Raider, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3, Vagrant Story and Metal Gear Solid. This is the game that I personally really associate with the PlayStation 1.

On the PlayStation 2, I would like to see Final Fantasy 10, Silent Hill 2, Burnout, SSX, and as many Japanese role players as possible. I’m not even sure there are any of the formats at the moment!

I know these things are difficult in terms of rights and everything, but if they can persuade Microsoft to let Bethesda games go there, is anything possible? Why, for example, does Activision not want Crash Bandicoot there? It’s basically free money for them. Curious to see how Embracer Tomb Raider will handle in the future as well. I’m still surprised that Sony was not the one that bought Tomb Raider.

miss the mania
After playing through Sonic Origins, after your review, I found the whole experience unexpectedly flat, and I think it’s because of Sonic Mania.

The relative failure of the Sonic games, to translate convincingly and consistently into 3D, ensured that the 16-bit remained largely the gold standard for the series, and it was always something of a relief to go back to them . But Sonic Mania takes the best pieces of those games and makes them better, leaving the original titles feeling a bit anemic. Almost everything about them looks more outdated than ever before due to the benchmark set by Sonic Mania, in terms of how creative classic style zones and gameplay can be.

It feels unfortunate to want Sonic Origins to fail, so I’m not sure I would go that far. But I hope it underperforms at least enough for Sega to realize that they can not trade on the same four games over and over again. Not when Sonic Mania provided a blueprint for how to continue their legacy.

punish me
Good news about the free update coming next month for Into The Breach (which, as it happens, I only picked up this year, thanks to some glowing praise for it in the inbox). New mechanical groups, enemies, bosses, weapons, missions, and music are all welcome, but the part I’m most excited about is the addition of an even harder difficulty mode.

After playing it enough that I can win a run on hard mode fairly reliably, the option to further increase the difficulty level is just what I need. If it’s a decent level of challenge, it can be another 40 hours of fun to chase after a win with each team.

As with Dead Cells, it is always welcome to see an indie developer who makes significant updates after the launch. Kudos to Subset Games for doing this, and I hope the mobile versions succeed in bringing this fantastic game to a larger audience.

the new thing
I think it’s pretty certain that Rockstar is working on a remaster of Red Dead Redemption, since Take-Two said they had a gazillion of them on the way and the GTA 3 remasters sold a ton, even if they were really poor quality.

I will definitely not buy it, no matter how much I enjoyed Red Dead Redemption 2, and I hope publishers come out of this new obsession with remasters. When you upgraded PS1 and PS2 games, it was good, given how limited the graphics were at the time. But when it comes to PlayStation 3 and 4 games, it just makes no sense. Especially not if you are going to try to charge the full price for it.

Publishers just see it as easy money and now we have potentially Naughty Dog and Rockstar, also some of the best developers in the business, who are wasting their time updating games that are perfectly fine on their own. Thanks to the pandemic, the games industry already feels like it’s stuck in neutral, and it’s not helping.

Failed expectations
Totally agree with the Reader’s Feature this weekend on Obi-Wan Kenobi. I could not believe how blatantly it tore down Fallen Order, as if it were some obscure thing no one had ever heard of. It would not have been so bad, but the fact that it did so incompetently was just an embarrassment. Like, I literally felt ashamed of the people who make the show.

Nothing about Reva makes sense as a character and Trilla handled the same beats much better. I understand that the program was made during the pandemic, but that’s no excuse that the script is as bad as it used to be. Just awful. Live action Star Wars is still the worst part of the whole franchise.

Extend the ring
I was very excited about FromSoftware saying they were almost done with their next game, so I read your story and realized that it’s probably going to be Armored Core. Which is not so exciting. If that’s what Hidetaka Miyazaki wants to do, that’s good for him. I think the man served a pet project.

However, I am very surprised to hear nothing of Elden Ring DLC. No matter how big a hit the game was. Van always did DLC for their games. Especially given how much cut content is in the game, I do not understand why it is not a no-brainer. The publisher is probably shouting for it, if nothing else.

I always assumed it would fill in the extra areas of the map. There is a lot of empty space on the map as it is now and as the world floats in space, it will be easy to find an excuse for some new pieces to just move in there. Maybe they do not want to postpone people buying the based game for the time being until it is ready, but I hope something is announced soon. As for me, Elden Ring is the game of the generation and as big as it is, I would love to see even more.

De-enhanced edition
Just to warn people, the Blade Runner Enhanced Edition is not a very good port according to this article. The free version of Blade Runner that uses ScummVM is much better, but you have to buy the Enhanced Edition (£ 6.99) to get the free version.

I decided not to get a physical edition of Limited Run Games as this is the Enhanced Edition they sell.

quick to judge
Sometimes game culture and the conversations that go with it make me feel so rejected. Recently, there has been a lot of talk around Starfield, a game that no one really knows much about, but everyone seems to have a high degree of certainty that it will be a mess.

I enjoy it just as much to disagree about games, but seeing people argue about something like that is just as stupid and makes me honestly wonder why game companies even show people games before they release them. It’s just not worth it.

I’m going to sound really old now, and I’m being compared to many in the gambling world, but people kept judging things until they really experienced it. I just think it’s a much healthier way to live your life. For what it’s worth, I’ll be more than happy with a Fallout in space. Goggas et al.

CG: That’s not how we remember it. People used to make hasty judgments based on just a few screenshots, at least Starfield had a 15 minute game video.

Inbox also runs
I just wonder, after reading your post about PS Plus Essential and others, do you like the games or are they there for now, away from tomorrow’s kind of deal? I’m still confused.

Does not the existence of Game Pass and PS Plus Premium GTi make your backlog of games endless?

This week’s hot topic
The topic for this weekend’s Inbox was suggested by reader Tosh, who asks what’s your favorite PlayStation exclusive?

Inspired by the recent launch of PS Plus Premium, we want to know what your favorite PlayStation exclusive is. It does not have to be one made by Sony, just one that was only available on a PlayStation console (including portable devices) at the time.

How important was the game, and exclusive in general, for you to get the console or to form a positive impression of the PlayStation brand, and is the franchise still going strong? If it became multiformate, did it diminish your enthusiasm for it in any way?
