Zelda doesn't want to pay for a remaster upgrade (Nintendo)

Tuesday's letters page is baffled by PlayStation's handling of its PC games as a reader falls in love with Crow Country.

The price of remasters
I absolutely believe that will be the case remasters for Zelda, and probably many other games, on the Switch. But I guess the big question is: will Nintendo charge for that? The situation for the Wii U is different because most people didn't have the original games, but the Switch has been a huge hit and all the games that are likely to get remasters have sold millions and millions. Is Nintendo really going to charge £60 for it again?

I know they would like that – Nintendo may be the 'nice' console maker, but they still love money – but I can't believe they would make that mistake. Maybe if Breath Of The Wild had a lot of new content, but I don't think that will be the case… they have other things to focus on and Aonuma was pretty clear that he's done with that duology of games.

Here's my guess: There will be a small fee, around £10 to £20, for anyone who already has the game or if you haven't bought them yet, as usual it's full price. I'd prefer if they were free, but I can't pretend I wouldn't pay that much for a Zelda game at 4K and 60fps.

My only concern is, what about if you own the game on cartridge? Are they going to get a slot on the Switch 2 for that? Although I'm sure the rumor was going around that they were using a new format. I'll be impressed if they make that effort, but as everyone knows, you never know with Nintendo.

Competitive formats
What's going on with Sony and how it handles its PC games? It's like they saw Microsoft screwing up the Xbox and thought, “Hold my beer” in terms of how you can waste all your experience and money on schoolboy mistakes. They would literally rather people not buy their games than not have PSN accounts, and for a primarily single-player game?!

I'd be the first to complain if Google or anyone else got into the games business, but. Real. PlayStation and Xbox look like losers right now. At first I thought the Reader function on the weekend was an exaggeration, but as the reader in the Inbox said… when I think about it, I can't really disagree.

They both make a bad situation worse. Not only that, but their ability to make things worse is actually the most competent they've been in a long time. Our two market leaders are asleep at the wheel and the only thing they are good at anymore is being bad.

Unofficially exclusive
Not that Square Enix isn't right to give up the PlayStation 5 exclusives, but I really don't see playing on Xbox making any difference. I remember when they finally released Metal Gear Solid, I think it was with the remaster of 3, and it didn't sell at all. Some franchises are so associated with a particular series that it's essentially pointless to release it on anything else.

Maybe if the Switch 2 can run enough of their games it could be fine as Final Fantasy was a Nintendo associated franchise but that was a long time ago and I'm sure very few gamers in the West feel that way otherwise than a PlayStation series.

Square Enix should have done this a long time ago, but I hope whatever they do works out in the future because Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is a fantastic game and I want to see more of it.

Copy
As for gaming magazines, have you ever thought about an annual GameCentral annual/magazine for the Christmas season?

It can be sold directly to those who want it and covers the year's best game reviews, news articles, letters and trending topics, etc.

Together with a prediction of the coming year, the next five years and even 10 years. And maybe the odd quiz and dot-to-dot puzzles!

Well, maybe not the dot-to-dot puzzles!

I know I would buy a physical copy if it was available. Or even digital if that was the only option.

GC: Only if we can arrange a cover disc.

Downward curve
100% perfect, Xbox and PSN are on their way, with the power of both Xbox and PlayStation the games seem to be getting worse and not better. Very little depth in each game, same copy of the last game.

They all come out and need patches to fix them because they are rushed, and the true crime near all games with microtransactions. Hate that! Just a money grab.

Evil tricks
I'm really excited to hear about all the Resident Evil rumors right now. At the very least, I hope it's a case of no smoke without fire. Although I don't feel like rumors really matter in Resident Evil because while it's quite interesting to know who the main character is or where it's set, it doesn't really make a difference to the gameplay.

What matters is the gimmick and the level of horror versus action. I don't necessarily like it one way or another, but varying those factors makes the different games interesting and different. After the not at all scary Resident Evil Village (except That bit) I think something more horror-oriented would be a good idea.

A new type of monster would also be a good idea. I like the readers' recent suggestion about Lovecraftian creatures, but I'm not sure Capcom would ever go that far. But if Village is inspired by classic Universal monsters, then the next one should also have a new theme.

If Leon is the star, how about a gimmick where he is infected with the zombie virus and his limbs are rotting away, but he can replace them with bionic ones. Maybe that's a bit stupid, but I think something needs to happen that isn't just shooting monsters with a gun. We've seen that hundreds of times before and for me these were the worst parts of Village.

I hope Capcom comes up with more workable ideas than I did.

Worth crowing about
Mega long time reader, and first time writer, but just wanted to sing the praises of Crow Country. I finished it last night and loved the old world charm and atmosphere of it. And let's not forget that simply amazing ladder at the end, a rarity these days!

Cheers, and keep up the good work GC, it's always a pleasure to read with a cup of coffee in the morning!

GC: Thank you.

Better than ever
I generally never replay games. When the credits roll on a game I'm usually done with it and any good intentions of going back to do the bits I missed, or playing the game in a different way fade away as I glimmer onto the next thing go.

However, I've been thinking about replaying Sunset Overdrive for a while now, which I haven't really thought about since the game launched. After I reinstalled it, I obviously ignored it for months, but I'm happy to say that I actually fired it up a few weeks ago and went through a tricky process of deleting the game's save data and restarting it stop syncing. I was back where I started (would a new game option really have been that hard for Insomniac to add?).

Now, the few times I've gone back to an older game, or at least looked it up, a common theme has been that games in your head were much better compared to actual reality. But this is a great little game that now runs so much better on the newer consoles. Gone are the annoyingly long load times with fast travel, and everything I loved about it the first time is still just as good all these years later.

The game is brilliantly self-deprecating, the characters are fun, the traversal is really satisfying and the brightly colored art style may not be the most graphic style in terms of detail, but it is one that I like. The character creator even has characters I like, instead of 5,000 boring variations.

If you haven't played it before, I recommend you give it a try (it's on Game Pass obvs). With everything happening on Xbox at the moment, perhaps it will follow Sea Of Thieves and we'll see old Xbox One exclusives top the PlayStation 5 charts.

Inbox is also running
The excellent Vampire Survivors game has just had a new update. Operation Guns, a Contra-style add-on, is now available for the whopping price of £1.99! If you can afford it and like the main game, give it a try.

GC: If we have time we will review it, but it is unexpectedly busy with new releases at the moment.

I'll tell you right now that I'm much more interested in seeing a new Doom at the Xbox Games Showcase than I am in Call Of Duty or Starfield DLC. I hope it's good, because Doom Eternal was fantastic.
