Gardaí calls for help in solving 35-year-old murder of young mother

Gardaí has renewed its appeal for information related to the murder of Antoinette Smith, a young mother of two, who went missing after a David Bowie concert in 1987.

Smith’s remains were discovered on April 3, 1988 at Glendoo Mountain, near the Lemass Monument near Glencree/Enniskerry.

In a statement released Monday, a garda spokesperson said that gardaí at Bray garda station is investigating the murder of Mrs Smith, who is from Clondalkin in Dublin.

“On Saturday, July 11, 1987, Antoinette and a friend attended the David Bowie concert in Slane, Co. Meath,” the spokesperson said.

“They returned to Dublin by bus and arrived at Parnell Square around 11pm. They went to La Mirage nightclub on Parnell Street. In the club they met two men they knew.

“They joined the men’s company and stayed with them until they all left shortly after 2am. Antoinette’s boyfriend broke up when they left the club.

Antoinette stayed for a while and spoke to the two men until all three of them walked the short distance to the taxi rank on O’Connell Street.

“The men took a taxi to the Ballymun area while Antoinette continued to walk past the Gresham Hotel on O’Connell Street to O’Connell Street Bridge.”

Mrs. Smith was subsequently reported missing to Gardaí by her husband. She remained missing for nine months until her remains were discovered on Glendoo Mountain.

She was the mother of two young daughters, Lisa and Rachel, who were seven and three years old respectively at the time of her disappearance.

It has now been 35 years since Antoinette Smith was last seen in O’Connell Street, Co Dublin.

Gardaí appeals to those who may have information since 1987, or who have come into possession of information in the intervening years.

The spokesperson said Gardaí would urge individuals, who are more than 30 years later, to do so, especially if relationships or associations have changed over the years.

“Gardaí would like to assure the public that they will treat everyone involved in the investigation in a sensitive manner,” the statement concluded.
