Gary Neville says the number of goals conceded by Manchester United last season was a 'huge disgrace' and they 'need to turn everything around' after being 'a mess everywhere' both on and off the pitch.
A lot has changed at Old Trafford in recent years. summerwith new arrivals above, including Dan Ashworth as sporting director.
There have also been signings, with Leny YoroJoshua Zirkzee, Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui join, while players such as Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane have left.
What has remained the same is that Erik ten Hag is still the manager and Neville believes the Dutchman must radically improve the team that finished eighth last season.
Firstly, Neville says the Red Devils need to stop giving away so many shots on their own goal, as that mistake was a source of embarrassment last season.
'Manchester United “Last season we had 670 shots on target. One shot on target should hurt you. 670 is a massive disgrace and they need to put an end to it,” Neville told Sky Sports.
'They were so vulnerable in midfield. They reduced the size of the team. Whether it works or not…'
Neville was referring to the midfield where Ten Hag has been moved to in order to reduce the size of the squad, with Kobbie Mainoo and Casemiro behind Mason Mount and Bruno Fernandes who play Fulham on Friday night.
But it is not just this that needs to be resolved, according to the former defender, who wrote a scathing review of the Red Devils last season.
“They were a mess everywhere,” he said. “Injuries were a mess, the balance of the team was a mess, the midfield was a mess, the number of goals they conceded and the shots they conceded, they didn't score.”
'There was very little good about Manchester United last season. The only positive was the FA Cup success. They have to change everything, it has to be so much better.'
