How is the new GCSE grading system different and how does it compare to the other systems?
Since 2017, the A*-G sliding scale uses a number system. New grades are marked from nine to one, with nine being the highest grade and one being the lowest.
Students in grade 9 achieve a grade higher than an A* and make up approximately 20 percent of students in grades 7 and above.
Numbers nine to seven cover grades A*-A, six to four for grades BC and three, two and one for grades DG.
Class U remains the same.
Why is there a new GCSE grading system?
The current scale allows for a wider range of grades in the highest regions of the results.
A distinction is now also made between old GCSE exams and new, more challenging exams.
The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual) said: “GCSEs in England have been reformed to meet the demands of universities and employers.
“They are based on new and more demanding subject matter, but still cater to the same broad range of skills.
“There are also higher grades compared to the old A* to G grades, to allow sixth forms, colleges, universities and employers to better distinguish between students of different abilities.”
What are the new boundaries?
As mentioned, the ninth grade is for students who have done excellent work and of the entire group, only five percent of students will get a nine. With four as the standard pass and five as a strong pass, this will make it easy for employers and prospective schools to make comparisons between the old and new systems.
