Ghislaine Maxwell to appeal sex trafficking conviction and conviction

The 60-year-old was found guilty by a jury of luring young girls into massage rooms for a disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein molesting between 1994 and 2004.

She was sentenced to 20 years in prison in federal court in New York’s Southern District last month.

Despite apologizing to her victims at her hearing, court documents show that Maxwell has now paid $505 (£420) to appeal both her conviction and sentence.

Jurors heard prosecutors describe her as “dangerous” during her three-week trial last year, and were told details of how she helped seduce vulnerable teens into Epstein’s various properties in order to sexually abuse him.

It appears from the file that her appeal has now been sent to the U.S. Court of Appeals.

Maxwell’s lawyers had said they would appeal the conviction after it emerged that one of the jurors in her trial had not revealed that he had been sexually assaulted.

Her counsel, led by Bobbi Sternheim, previously said jury member Scotty David’s actions demonstrated “a lack of trustworthiness and a thirst for publicity” when the socialite filed for a new trial.

In a written ruling, Judge Alison Nathan said the jury’s convictions were “easily supported” by witness statements and documentary evidence, as Maxwell’s attempt to overturn the conviction was dismissed.

In submissions ahead of her sentencing hearing, counsel for the defendant said she would face no more than four to five years in prison, saying it would be “a mockery of justice for her to face a punishment that would be appropriate.” been to Epstein.”

But the judge gave Maxwell a much harsher sentence, saying she “participated repeatedly and over many years in a horrific scheme to traffick young girls, some as young as 14 years old”.

Judge Nathan said it was important that while “Epstein was central to this plan,” she was not convicted “as a power of attorney” before him.

She said: “The defendant’s behavior… was atrocious and predatory.

“Mrs. Maxwell worked with Epstein to select young victims who were vulnerable and played a critical role in facilitating sexual abuse.”

Before serving his sentence, Judge Nathan heard from four of Maxwell’s victims, Annie Farmer, Sarah Ransome, Elizabeth Stein, and the prosecutor known by the pseudonym “Kate,” who read victim statements to the court, describing her as a ” manipulative, cruel and ruthless person”.

Maxwell has been in jail since July 2020, despite numerous attempts by her counsel to release her on bail.

Epstein was found dead in his cell in a Manhattan federal prison in August 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges.

Death was ruled suicide.
