his afternoon crowds flocked to see George Ezra after the English singer announced he would be putting on a surprise show at Glastonbury.
“SURPRISE! glastonbury see you at 2pm on the John Peel Stage for a big old party,” Ezra tweeted at 11am.
Just three days earlier, Ezra had to pull out of the Tinderbox festival in Denmark because he was suffering from a “nasty bout of laryngitis”.
In a Tweet shared on June 23, he explained: “I am suffering from a nasty bout of laryngitis and have been advised by a doctor to take 48 hours of complete vocal rest.”
He added: “I hate having to cancel shows, but unfortunately I can’t control this one.”
Fortunately, however, it appears that Ezra has made a quick recovery, and not long after the news of his performance was announced, excited fans began to gather around the John Peel stage.
“This is what happens when a secret set isn’t secret,” joked one passerby.
This isn’t the first surprise show at Glastonbury this year. After swirling rumors, Paolo Nutini played The Rabbit Hole early last night. Then it was confirmed in today’s edition of Glastonbury Free Press that Jack White would be playing on The Park Stage tonight.
The news was shared as a message. It said: “Exciting opportunity in the field of audience science. Musician Jack White seeks 10,000 lively and boisterous individuals to participate in a top-secret experiment of music concerts. Qualified candidates must apply in person at The Park Stage on June 26 at 6:00 PM.
Although Glastonbury Festival ends tonight, there’s still a ton of music to come: Diana Ross, Elbow, Lorde and Kendrick Lamar will be playing on the Pyramid Stage this afternoon and evening, Pet Shop Boys and Kacey Musgraves will be playing on the Other Stage, Bicep will be playing on the West Holts Stage and Little Dragon and Charlie XCX will play on the John Peel Stage.
Since Ezra’s announcement, his place in the 2022 John Peel Stage lineup has been added to the Glastonbury website.
Ezra became known in 2014 with his hit Budapest. Then the singer-songwriter’s second album Staying at Tamara reached number one in the UK, as did his 2018 song Shotgun. In 2019, he won a Brit Award for British Male Solo Artist.
