Gore teen Sydney heading for leadership course

A Gore teen is one of 10 young people selected to participate in the Blue Star leadership program in Sydney this weekend.

Albert Dennison (17) was nominated by Senior Constable Stephen Heyrick, and his application was accepted from among hundreds put forward by Blue Light’s 72 offices across New Zealand.

Mr. Dennison, an apprentice electrician, has been volunteering at Gore Blue Light for about three and a half years.

“It will be my first time abroad, so it’s quite exciting,” he said.

He became involved in the charity that works with the police after his older brother Tom started volunteering.

”I helped as a youth leader for Blue Light camps, which is very rewarding. It’s really nice to meet the kids and see kids come out of their comfort zone and it’s always a fun weekend.”

The Blue Star leadership program is led by the Police Citizens Youth Clubs New South Wales (PCYC) in Sydney.

In addition to the group from New Zealand, the first nation representatives and youth from the 16,000 members of PCYC and 64 clubs across NSW will attend the program.

Blue Light chief executive Rod Bell said the club is one of the leading youth organizations in Australia.

“This is a great opportunity for our young people from across the country, many of whom have never been to New Zealand, to experience leadership training from one of Australia’s leading youth charities,” he said.

“The Blue Star leadership program is designed to help ‘create young leaders for tomorrow’ within local communities.”

Targeting young people aged 16-18, the program gives them the tools and helps them develop the attitudes and skills they need to actively engage with their community as youth leaders.

“We hope Albert will continue to use the skills learned and connections made to drive positive change in communities,” said Mr Bell.

Mr Dennison said that after the trip he would continue to be involved with Gore Blue Light while also working to complete his apprenticeship.
