Greek authorities have issued a new warning this afternoon (August 16) expressing concern over the possibility of a wave of forest fires tomorrow.
The Greek Civil Protection has issued a new warning of a very high fire risk (category 4) for Saturday, August 17, 2024, Mirror Online reports.
The General Secretariat for Civil Protection has instructed state and local services in these areas to remain on high alert and to be able to respond quickly to possible fires. This includes carrying out both aerial and ground patrols.
There is also a precautionary measure in place restricting the movement of vehicles and people in national parks, forests and other risk areas.
Authorities have urged the public to exercise extreme caution and avoid any outdoor activities that could accidentally cause fires, such as burning vegetation, using machinery that produces sparks, lighting barbecues or throwing away lit cigarettes.
They also reminded the public to contact the fire brigade by calling 199 if they notice a fire.
Popular British holiday destinations such as Spain, Greece and Portugal are all experiencing extreme temperatures that can exceed 40 degrees Celsius.
In Spain, much of the country has been struggling with severe drought for weeks, with water supply restrictions in several regions, including Catalonia.
According to the warning, the following regions are at very high risk:
Attica
Sterea Ellada (Viotia, Evia including the island of Skyros)
Southern Aegean (Cyclades)
North Aegean Sea (Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Ikaria)
Peloponnese (Corinth, Argolida)
Crete
