Gunmen attack INEC officials in Enugu

Officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) have been attacked by gunmen in Igboze North Local Government Area of ​​Enugu State.

Two voter registration machines and staff personal items, such as cell phones, were lost after the attack.

INEC Chair, Information and Voter Education Committee, Festus Okoye, who confirmed the attack on Thursday, July 14, said election officials were involved in continuous voter registration (CVR) before gunmen stormed Umuopu Community Primary School in Umuozzi Ward 19 in the south. -Eastern state.

After the administrative secretary in Enugu state, Jude Okwuonu reported the incident to INEC headquarters, the commission decided to suspend the continuous voter registration (CVR) exercise in the affected area.

The commission also reported the incident to the police in Enugu state to launch an investigation.

“The gunmen fired sporadically into the air to disperse registrants and registration officers. In the ensuing stampede, one of our employees was injured and is being treated in a hospital.

“Two voter registration machines and staff personal items, such as cell phones, have been lost. Consequently, the departmental level registration of voters in Igboeze North is hereby suspended.”
