Gunmen kill ‘nine people’, including mayor, and injure at least 20 others as panicked residents take cover in Mexico

GUNMEN have killed nine people, including a mayor and injured at least 20 others in a massacre, it has been reported.

Cartel members opened fire in an official building and threw projectiles at residents in the streets and their homes before the attack.

The exterior of the building is covered in bullet holes and other images, which we do not publish, showed bloodied victims.

Among the dead today are seven police officers in San Miguel Totolapan, Mexico.

Democratic Union Party (PRD) mayor Conrado Mendoza Almeda and his father and former mayor Juan Mendoza were also executed.

Panic residents hid in their homes and the army took to the streets, international media reported.

The PRD condemned tonight’s attack and called it cowardly.

It added on social media: “We demand justice. Enough violence and impunity.”

The armed group Los Tequileros has claimed responsibility. It was previously thought that the group had stopped working.

The gang was founded around 2012 by former cohorts of drug cartels, the Templars and La Familia.

They carried out kidnappings in Guerrero, Mexico for several months in 2016, including one in which gunmen took 10 people.

In December of that year, armed residents captured the mother and friends of the group’s head in retaliation.

Mexico has long been plagued by shootings, with casualties this year including several tourists and a Brit.

And in 2021, the bodies of nine men were found hanging from an underpass during a fight for control between the Sinaloa and Jalisco cartels, in the Zacatecas . region
