Michelle Everett, local Kāpiti coast, found a pouwhenua that washed up on Peka Peka beach.

A half-carved pouwhenua washed up at Peka Peka Beach on the Kāpiti coast.

Michelle Everett found the “large” four-meter-long, half-meter-wide pouwhenua in the waves of Peka Peka Beach on Tuesday night while walking her dog.

Some work had already begun on the peacock, and there were some white marks.

It was still in the same place when she returned Wednesday morning.

“You’re used to seeing big stumps washed out, but nothing like carving,” Evertett said. “You know someone probably missed it.”

The Kāpiti Coast District Council said no one had contacted the council about a missing pouwhenua.

Local iwi including Ngāti Toa Rangatira, Raukawa ki te Tonga, and Te Atiawa ki Whakarongotai were approached for comment.
