“I’m in shock,” said the home’s owner, who asked not to be named.

The man stayed in her house for a few days and started acting “strange”, worrying her family, until she called the police about violating him. He fought the police and ended up “halfway on the island of Kapiti”.

When police showed up, it sparked a “big fight” between the man and six police officers, said Brendan — another resident of the home and the homeowner’s son.

There was a lot of “banging and cracking” as the man resisted arrest, leading to holes in the walls of the house.

The man eventually fell to the ground from a balcony on the first floor of the house, injuring his head, before attempting to swim to Kapiti Island.

Police were asked to force the man into a residence, but “he resisted the police by rolling off the balcony and running into the ocean,” a police spokesman confirmed. “He was rescued from the sea and taken to hospital in serious condition.”

The man was taken to the coast by the Coast Guard and no charges have been filed at this time. The Coast Guard confirmed that a volunteer team helped the police get him to shore.

Wellington Hospital confirmed the man is now in a stable condition in the ER.

“He swam halfway to the island,” said the homeowner.

The homeowner hired the man as a tenant because he said he needed help and felt “embarrassed” that her kindness was being taken advantage of. Police told her that the man had used a false name.

“We have a problem with homelessness in Kāpiti and you think you should be nice and help people, but look what happened,” she said.

“It’s just awful.”
