Sports news: Freddie Steward has withdrawn a red card

England rugby union fullback Freddie Steward has had his controversial red card revoked after being sent off for a dangerous tackle on Hugo Keenan during England’s defeat to Ireland in Dublin.

Referee Jaco Peyper gave the red card because Steward’s elbow made contact with Keenan’s head as he braced for a collision.

However, a review panel ruled that there were sufficient mitigating factors, including the late change in Keenan’s positioningwhich should have resulted in a yellow card instead of a red card.

Steward’s suspension has therefore been lifted and he could now play in Leicester’s Gallagher Premiership match with Bristol on Saturday.
