Following the announcement yesterday, a Number 10 spokesman said the government’s position “remains unchanged”.

They added: “But a decision has been taken by the prime minister, so we will study the details of the proposal carefully and the high court will now consider whether the Scottish Government’s lord should accept lawyer’s reference.”

With the aftermath of the referendum guaranteed to spread outside Scotland to the rest of the UK, should the Prime Minister allow it to continue?
