Great Britain’s Heather Watson had her best ever run at Wimbledon with a 7-6 6-2 victory over Kaja Juvan to secure her place in the fourth round.

The 30-year-old, world No. 109, kept her nerve to seal her biggest run at a Grand Slam and fell to her knees to kiss the grass after winning the crucial match point to cause wild celebrations from the home crowd on Court 1.

The British number 4 then takes on German number 97 Jule Niemeier, and will take her chances after knocking out Slovenian number 62 Juvan in straight sets.

“Well, I wouldn’t be if there wasn’t drama in the end!” An emotional Watson said after a nervous finish to the second set. ‘Wow, what an atmosphere.

“Nowhere would I rather make round four. i felt like [Kaja Juvan] played her best tennis at the end, I wasn’t even that nervous, but you guys convinced me.

“I’m so happy, thank you to my team for pushing me through and being with me through thick and thin. I’m not speechless because I’m chatting, but I don’t know what to say.

“It means everything, playing at home here for you, the atmosphere is everything. Can you all come back for my fourth round next week!’

Watson, who defeated Tamara Korpatsch and Wang Qiang to arrange Friday’s meeting with Juvan, could be joined in the fourth round by fellow Briton Katie Boutler who will face Harmony Tan tomorrow.

“I’ve seen all of their matches and even if I missed them, I watched them later in the recap,” Watson said of her British compatriots.

“It’s really inspiring and we all challenge each other.”
