The climate and infrastructure legislation and pollution standards passed during the Biden administration have put the U.S. energy sector on a path to unprecedented progress in reducing carbon emissions. According to the new NRDC analysis, these federal policies, if sustained, will lead to a 65 percent reduction in carbon emissions from 2005 levels by 2030 and an 80 percent reduction by 2040. Clean energy is expected to account for more than half of all electricity generation within the next five years.

While more government and private sector action is needed to achieve the U.S. climate goal of an economy-wide reduction of 50 percent in greenhouse gas emissions from 2005 levels by 2030, this new analysis shows that the clean energy economy and policies to reduce carbon emissions are delivering on their promise.
