Rec Room Studio is an upcoming PC-based creation tool powered by Unity that allows creators to build higher fidelity worlds.
The upcoming software will allow creators to “quickly add assets and objects to existing ones Rooms and create and share custom textures, animations, audio, and more.” Rec Room, unveiled as part of the Rec Con 2022 event, says the software will also enable collaboration with other players using the Maker Pen.
Rec Room Studio “puts top quality graphics and animations at the fingertips of the creator community,” said the startup. The new software is coming “soon” with Rec Room registrations for a private beta. A company representative said that Rec Room’s recent Showdown original game mode is the current public preview of something built into the tool.
The announcement comes about two weeks before Connect, an event that Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg said would include: major updates to its competing Horizon Worlds creation platform. Rec Room is already available on a wide variety of devices (including phones, game consoles and VR), and the startup says it reached 82 million lifetime users in the first quarter of this year and paid $1 million to creators. Rec Room is now also available as a standalone PC client.
The competition between platforms like VRChat, Rec Room. Roblox and Horizon Worlds seem to be heating up as investors double and engineers at every job to bridge the gap between more user-friendly tools and professional game engines like Unreal Engine and Unity. We’ll be keeping a close eye on this space over the coming months, so come back with UploadVR as we delve into the latest developments.
