A man who took his grandchildren for an “incredibly dangerous” walk on a popular Dunedin headland sparked a major emergency call yesterday, police say.
Officer Nick Turner, of Dunedin, said officers responded to reports of a man walking near the cliff edge at Lawyers Head around 1 p.m.
The man was with his grandchildren, Const Turner said.
The incident served as a reminder not to cross the barrier at the head as the pollen was very slippery in the area.
“[It’s] incredibly dangerous, really,” said Const Turner.
The incident sparked a fairly large appeal, with members of the police negotiation team and Land Search and Rescue’s rescue team being notified.
“It captured a lot of resources.”
The man had been “educated” about the cliff’s dangers, Const Turner said.
