Hot Weekend Topic: Most Wanted Upcoming Video Games

Readers discuss the games they’re most looking forward to in the coming months and years, including God Of War and Sonic Frontiers.

The topic for this week’s Hot Topic was suggested by reader Campbell, based on the fact that the E3 announcement season is now over and most games for this year have now been announced.

While it’s a smaller range than usual, there were plenty of 2022 games that people were excited about, although 2023 titles like starfield and Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 seemed to get the most mentions.

A full year
I think everyone realizes it’s been a pretty quiet Christmas (gotta love that stupid Bayonetta 3 release date!) but I think there are some gems in there. I’d like to say that the game I’m most looking forward to is XCOM 3, as it’s pretty much the only game from the Nvidia leak yet to be confirmed.

Midnight Suns will do very well while I wait though as it appears to be a similar game and Firaxis is clearly well practiced in strategy games. I’m also interested in Mario + Rabbids Sparks Of Hope for similar reasons, as the original was really good.

The Callisto protocol also has my interest, although I’m a little concerned that it might be a little too gory and charmless for me. There’s a reason Resident Evil is so loved and it’s because it’s scary but also pretty wacky so it doesn’t make you feel depressed when you play it.

If we’re talking about the most anticipated game regardless of its release date, it has to be Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2. I have no idea when it will come out but I will be there on day zero when the time comes, no questions asked.

James Bond returns
There are a few games out there that I’m looking forward to, but I wasn’t sure if we could list all those games we’re looking forward to or just our most anticipated and that would be Io-Interactive’s 007 game. Perhaps this is silly as we know very little about the game other than the developers. But the fact that Io-Interactive is on board gives me hope that they can do a great job, given how great the Hitman games have been.

I think it will have to be a very different game from Hitman, but there are some similarities in gameplay terms that I could see transitioning into a Bond game, and the style and detail of the Hitman games is already quite fitting.

However, despite my excitement, there is some concern as I’ve had a few duds when venturing outside the Hitman realm with Kane & Lynch. I’m also concerned about their storytelling, which has never been more interesting in the Hitman games, but I think there’s a lot to improve upon for a Bond game. Hopefully they’ve hired new talent to improve that aspect so we can play another great Bond game.

GC: Lists are boring, it’s better to talk about what you are most interested in, as you have done.

Enchanting choice
Saints Row boat could still be interesting. Probably not game of the year material, maybe 7 or 8 out of 10, tops, right? I was ready to write Sonic Frontiers off completely after a pretty damning preview of GameMe, but recently I saw a video of a YouTuber who seems to specialize in Sonic content claiming that the IGN material, believed to have been played by the man from GameMe, was from an earlier build – and things could be even more promising. But probably not so much. It is very unlikely that Elden Ring or even Lego Star Wars will give you sleepless nights.

So that means Bayonetta 3. We know it’s coming out just in time for Halloween and it looks a lot more alive than the last gameplay trailer. Unfortunately, Enzo has returned. Oh dear Jesus. And Viola’s personality seems a little bland – your typical serious rookie. Big question though: so that’s not the original voice actress in the lead role? And it still gives me prequel vibes in terms of story, but still, Luca is in it. And Jeanne wears her hair super long.

I’d really be ready to play through the second game, wouldn’t I?

Survival horror
As a fan of the Moomins, Snufkin: Melody Of Moominvalley is the one game I look forward to more than any other.

In my mind it’s actually Moomins: Breath Of The Wild, but I’m prepared for a little disappointment on this one. Nevertheless, it looks set to be a visually stunning adventure with plenty of fan service and Sigur Rós music.

Unfortunately, I don’t like rhythmic action scenes, so I hope they are either well implemented or not too numerous.

Anyway, it’s coming out next year, so I’ll just have to wait. Because how else can spring come back?

GC: To our surprise, this game turns out to be real and you didn’t just dream it:

false warning
I have to be honest, there are two games that I am most looking forward to. God Of War Ragnarök the first one, I loved the last one and I hope the new one isn’t like Horizon Forbidden West where there was nothing new and it could have been DLC.

The second game has to be Modern Warfare 2. I like Infinity Ward and I like Call Of Duty from the modern era. There have been so many WW2 and future set games that I’m tired of them and I know there have been a lot of modern games, but I just love Call Of Duty in that setting. Infinity Ward has to be the best in modern Call Of Duty, the only thing I’m not looking forward to is the next-gen pricing.

I mean the last generation prices are £70 so you are talking at least £80 for the next generation and for me that is a lot so me and my partner share the price and share games. I know what some will say about that, but I’m not paying $80+ for a game that’s been out for 12 months and then a new one comes out and the battle pass price is added. If they stop sharing games, I’ll stop gaming, I won’t get ripped off by greedy companies anymore.

GC: The next-gen and last-gen games are sold in the same packagefor £70.

GT Killer
I’m most looking forward to the next Forza, which I think will be out next year.

I’m quite jealous of Gran Turismo 7 on the PlayStation 5, because the driving looks impressive. I hope Forza Motorsport is just as good, if not better. The Microsoft event last month had a preview and it looked great.

Out of this world choices
Bethesda’s Starfield for me is a game worth getting excited about. Lots of good indie and other mainstream titles are coming in the next few years, especially Elder Scrolls 6. But that sounds like a distant dream right now. That said, maybe Starfield is a distant dream too!

The overall premise of the game, made by developers who seem very passionate about what they do, is very hopeful indeed. I’m a huge fan of Mass Effect and Dead Space and Starfield seems to be a mind-blowing affair like those titles.

The game world reminds me of a Fallout/Mass Effect-esque affair, the environments seem to show this through some post-apocalyptic looking settlements and border style buildings. It’s hard to see how different planets will be done and how the flying to them works, plus the orbital approach and how much control you have!

Hogwarts Legacy is another interesting title; it should be the ultimate Harry Potter game world if the positive speculations are fulfilled. Definitely sign me up as a freshman there, sure.

Technology and advancements over the years still make me wonder what the limits of developers are in making their games, considering the cost and complexity of creating these gems. Anyway, as always, there will never be a dull moment, especially with Zelda: Breath Of The Wild 2 at some point as well. Wow indeed.
