The residents all managed to get away before firefighters arrived, but two people were taken to hospital with minor smoke inhalation injuries, Porirua Senior Station Officer Andrew Walker said.

The fire service received several reports of the fire just before 7 p.m.

A house in Molyneux Close was completely on fire and the fire also threatened a neighboring property. Crews managed to contain it before it spread further.

Investigators are still trying to find the cause of the fire, but it appeared that the fire started in a bathroom. The residents of the house were not aware of it until it spread to the rest of the house and set off smoke detectors, Walker said.

There was a delay in reaching the fire due to the distance from the station, he said. It had to make several calls to get the six vehicles needed to respond, which ended with the support of the Johnsonville Fire Station and volunteer brigades from Porirua and Plimmerton.
