How to Customize Your Own Personal Apple News Feed

The stock News app on you iPhone† iPadand mac uses your own preferences to find the best matching stories to display on the main page. With every single story review, following or blocking a news source, or the simple restriction of certain content, you can create a News app that’s perfect for you.

We’ve put together a collection of helpful tips to help you create the perfect Apple News experience.

Perhaps the most important part of news curation is refining the stories suggested every hour. The easiest way to let the app know is to rate a story so it can improve its suggestions.

The more ratings you give the app, the better the app understands your likes and dislikes.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the story you want to rate.
2. Select More proposals if you liked the story, or propose less if you prefer not to see this story or similar stories.
3. The corresponding thumbs up or thumbs down icon is displayed to indicate your preference. To change your rating, simply tap the Ellipse icon again.

Just as rating specific stories helps the app narrow the selection of inbound stories, following or blocking a news source channel will narrow the selection of news publications.

To see more content from a particular publisher, it’s recommended that you follow the publisher’s “channel” in Apple News.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the story accompanying the publication you want to review.
2. Select Follow channel†
3. The publisher may ask you to take additional confirmation steps. Follow the instructions on the screen.

When the interface refreshes, Apple News will prioritize channels you’ve chosen to follow. Channels you haven’t followed explicitly will also see their articles appear, albeit at a slower rate.

You can see a list of all the news channels you’ve followed in the ‘Channels and Topics’ section under the Next tab from within the app.

Conversely, to stop seeing content from a particular publisher, it is recommended to block the channel.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the story accompanying the publication you want to review.
2. Select Block channel†

While the currently featured stories will temporarily remain on the interface, no further articles from the channel will be displayed when the app is updated with refreshed news. However, the app can show you a large blank space related to what used to be articles and headlines from that source.

You can also easily unblock a channel.

1. Tap Next in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Scroll down and tap Blocked channels and topics†
3. Press – icon next to the channel you want to unblock, then tap Unblock†

Apple News also includes Topics, stories about a similar topic grouped into one section. You can also control whether the topic is followed or blocked.

To see more content of a particular topic, it is recommended to follow the topic.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the subject heading.
2. Select Follow topic†

When the interface refreshes, Apple News prioritizes topics you’ve chosen to follow.

Conversely, in order to stop seeing content from a particular topic, it is recommended to block the topic.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the subject heading.
2. Select block topic†
3. A popup will appear asking if you want to block the channel. Tap Block†

Unlike articles and publisher channels, the blocked channel is immediately removed from the feed once the block is confirmed. It is also easy to reverse this block.

1. Tap Next in the bottom navigation bar.
2. Scroll down and tap Blocked channels and topics†
3. Press – icon next to the topic you want to unblock, then tap Unblock†

Topics that you didn’t specify when you first set up the app may also be asked to stop being suggested.

1. Press Ellipse icon of the subject heading.
2. Tap Stop suggesting†

Finally, you can restrict Apple News’ Today feed to only show channels you follow, with the result that everything else will be blocked.

3. To turn on Limit stories in today†

For best results, it is recommended that you prune the feed carefully to maintain a good diversity of articles, genres, and sources. By paying close attention to what’s really like and dislike in the headlines, the app can maintain a balanced portrayal of events from around the world.
