Mr Sunak got 101 votes in the second round of the contest and Ms Mordaunt 83 – 16 added to her previous count – after another crazy day in Westminster, where Foreign Secretary Liz Truss called on the party’s right wing to to unite behind her.
Mrs. Truss was way behind with 64, up 14, while Kemi Badenoch got 49. Tom Tugendhat, who portrayed himself as the champion of the moderates, lost support by 32 votes. While he insists he has no intention of withdrawing, he will be the favorite to go into the next round on Monday.
Ms Mordaunt now seems in a strong position to reach the last two, which will go to a second vote of Conservative members. And she has been installed as the bookmakers’ favorite after polls suggested she would win against one of her rivals.
The focus will now shift to a series of TV debates scheduled over the weekend, where the candidates will head to head for the first time.
