I wish it was more connected to Toy Story – The Hollywood Reporter

Tim Allen finally weighs in on ongoing discussion about Pixar’s recent film light yearwhich tells the origin story of the human Space Ranger who would inspire the Buzz Lightyear toy Allen found in the four Toy Story movies.

During a video interview with AdditionalAllen explained that he “stayed out of this” but recalled a conversation with Pixar creatives years ago about possibly exploring Buzz’s origins. “Like I said a long time ago, we talked about this years ago,” Allen said. “It came up in one of the sessions; I said what a fun movie that would be.”

light yearvoiced by Chris Evans as the title character, it was directed by Angus MacLane, who wrote and directed the 2011 theatrical short film. Toy Story Show: Little Fry and the 2013 ABC Halloween special Toy Story of Terror! light year marks the first feature film in the franchise not to be credited with John Lasseter, the Pixar co-founder who directed the first two Toy Story films and did not return to the company after a sabbatical in 2017 amid allegations of sexual misconduct from colleagues.

“The brass that made the first four movies, it’s just a whole new team that really has nothing to do with the first movies,” Allen continued, though not naming anyone specifically. He said he initially assumed that light year would feature human actors rather than be an animation project adding “there really isn’t” toy story’sBuzz without Woody.”

He called himself ‘a conspiracy theorist’, the Renovation alum said he expected light year to be “a great adventure story. As I see it is not a great adventure story. It’s a beautiful story. It just doesn’t seem to be related to the toy.”

Allen concluded, “It’s not related to Buzz. It’s just not a connection. I wish there was a better connection.”

The film bowed for a jaw-dropping $50.6 million and debuted at number 2 behind holdover Jurassic World Dominion when it debuted.

“The movie didn’t hit the right buttons,” a rival film director said earlier The Hollywood Reporter about light year’s disappointing opening.

light year has been a source of controversy in recent weeks. Such public figures as Patricia Heaton criticized the film ahead of its June 17 release for not involving Allen, and the film has also made headlines over reactions to a same-sex kiss.
