Gena Rowlands, the legendary actress known for her impressive performances in films such as A Woman Under the Influence and The Notebook, has died at the age of 94.
Rowlands died at her home in Indian Wells, Californiasurrounded by family.
Although no official cause of death has been released, it is widely believed that she suffered from Alzheimer's disease in her final years.
Rowlands' illustrious career spanned several decades and earned her critical acclaim, including four Primetime Emmy Prizes, two Golden Globe Awardsand two Oscar nominations.
She was nominated for an Academy Award for her roles in A Woman Under the Influence (1974) and Gloria (1980), both directed by her late husband John Cassavetes.
The couple's collaborations are regarded as milestones in independent American cinema.
Rowlands was born on June 19, 1930 in Cambria, Wisconsin and moved to New York City turned to acting after working in regional theater.
She made her Broadway debut in The Seven Year Itch and later starred opposite Edward G. Robinson in the Broadway play Middle of the Night (1956).
Her early career also included numerous television appearances, including roles on the television series Top Secret and guest roles on popular anthology series.
