Injured paraglider on repatriation flight to Aussie

Queenstown paraglider Nick Neynens, who crashed into a cliff in France, boarded a repatriation flight to Brisbane on Wednesday.

Initially he was supposed to fly to Brisbane last Saturday, but he tested positive for Covid and was unable to travel.

Since the June 14 crash, which left Neynens with serious head and spine injuries, he has been recovering in a French hospital, supported by his mother, Karen.

In a video update, Neynens says: “Everything is going pretty well, the stitching in my back is almost healed, I just need to give that some more air.

“I can’t really use my legs, but it’s still a long way to see if I can get some of that back,” he says.

Neynens’ girlfriend, Susy Goldner, set up a GoFundMe page last week to help with repatriation and other medical and living expenses.

By Thursday, the page had reached more than $64,000 in donations.

“Thank you for all the donations so far, it’s been great and if we end up with too much money – though [repatriation is] will probably cost a lot – we’re going to have to have something to do with it,” he says.
