The alert, which covers all of Leinster, Cavan, Donegal, Monaghan, Clare, Cork, Limerick, Tipperary, Waterford and all of Connacht, remains in force until 10pm this evening.
Those affected will experience heavy downpours and thunderstorms with the possible consequences of localized flooding, difficult travel conditions and poor visibility.
The Status Orange alert for Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford, Tipperary and Waterford expired at 8pm.
Wexford was hit by flash flooding earlier today due to heavy rain and hailstones, leaving a large amount of surface water on local roads.
It will be a cloudy night with initially heavy rain showers and some thunderstorms. The showers will decrease and become less frequent during the night. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 11 degrees with a weak northwest wind.
Met Éireann predicts cloudy weather with scattered showers on Wednesday, although showers will be lighter than in previous days.
Tomorrow evening there will be locally light rain and drizzle in the northeast. Highest temperatures of 13 to 17 degrees with a moderate to fresh northwest wind.
At the end of the working week it will be mainly dry, with temperatures closer to average again. It will be increasingly wetter on Saturday.
Wednesday night will be mostly cloudy and dry, apart from some light rain and drizzle in the northeast. Some clear spells are developing in the south.
Lowest temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees with a moderate to fresh northwest wind.
Thursday will remain mainly dry and cloudy with scattered showers. A fresher feeling with highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees with moderate northerly winds.
It will remain dry on Thursday night with long spells of sunshine. Lowest temperatures of 5 to 9 degrees with a weak northwest wind.
Friday will again be a mainly dry but cloudy day with a chance of some light showers. Highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees with a weak southwest to west wind.
It will be cloudy and wet on Saturday and a band of rain will spread across the country from the west. Highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees with a moderate to fresh southwest wind.
“Current indications suggest that conditions will gradually become drier and calmer for Sunday and early next week,” Met Éireann added.
