Who is Jill Biden?

Jill Biden made history when her husband, President Joe Biden, took office by becoming the first woman with a day job.

When her husband took office, Jill was adamant that she would continue to work while she held the position.

Her decision garnered both criticism and support, but Jill said she never intended to make a statement. She just likes to teach.

She recalled in her 2019 memoir, Where the Light Enters, telling her husband, “I just wanted to do what I love to do.”

Her husband’s response: “Of course you should.”

In class, Jill is known simply as Ms. B and likes to differentiate between her professional teaching life and that of a politician’s wife.

When her students ask if she is Joe Biden’s wife, she says she is a relative.

“Or if I get pushed, I say, ‘You know, I’m your English teacher,'” she told NPR in 2013

“That’s who I want to be. I want dr. B, their English teacher, and I think they like that to be honest.’

What kind of doctor is Jill?

Jill Biden has been a lifelong educator, receiving her PhD in Educational Leadership from the University of Delaware.

She has been open about preferring to be referred to by her PhD, but has been criticized for her decision.

In an opinion piece published by The Wall Street Journalthe author, Joseph Epsteincalled on Jill Biden to remove Dr from her title.

“Madame First Lady – Mrs. Biden – Jill – Boy: A little advice on what may seem like a little bit, but I think it’s not unimportant. Any chance you put the “Dr.” before your name?” He wrote.

He continued: “A wise man once said that no one should call himself a doctor unless he has had a child. Think about it, Dr. Jill, and drop the doctor right away.”

Jill Biden spoke out against the comments and gained support from other women who argued that a woman’s success should not be swept under the rug.

“That was such a surprise,” Jill said on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert in December 2020.

“It was really the tone of it that I think — you know, he called me kiddo.”

“And one of the things I’m most proud of is my PhD,” she said. “I mean, I worked so hard for it.”

She wrote her dissertation on retaining community college students and asked what steps colleges can take to improve this.
