“It’s not about if it happens to your kids, it’s when”: Families of mass shooting victims push for assault weapons ban #matter #itll #happen #kids #Families #mass #shooting #victims #push #assault #weapons #ban Welcome to OLASMEDIA TV NEWSThis is what we have for you today:
Brett Cross never thought he would speak on behalf of a child who was shot at school. But on Wednesday, he was in Washington, DC, joining families and survivors from Uvalde, Texas and other mass shootings to demand a ban on assault weapons.
Cross’ cousin, 10-year-old Uziyah Garcia – who lived with him and whom he considered a son – was one of 19 children killed in the Uvalde massacre.
“He was energetic, just always full of love,” Cross told CBS News. “I just want the best for my children. One will never turn 11. I have others who are emotionally distraught because they have lost their brother.”
Organizers of the “March Fourth” gun control rally said they want Highland Park, Illinois, where a gunman killed seven people in a parade on July 4, to be the last community affected by a mass shooting.
But Cross warned that every city must be prepared for a similar tragedy.
“It’s not a question of whether it will happen to your children, but when,” Cross said. “Because I never thought this would happen to me.”
President Biden signed a bipartisan gun control bill last month — the first in three decades. Cross said it doesn’t go far enough.
“We must ban the assault rifles. I’m sure everyone saw last night’s video,” Cross said, referring to the surveillance video showing Uvalde’s gunman arriving at Robb Elementary School and the police officers’ delayed response. “The number of rounds that happened as fast as they did would not have happened with any other weapon.”
“Those were my son’s last moments,” Cross continued. “It’s that he came in so casually. And then to see the police that we tell our kids to trust and to put their trust in and everything, just watch and do nothing. The agents there in Uvalde were cowards. It was a massacre. My son didn’t have a belly after that. It’s not left or right, Republican, Democratic, red or blue. Isn’t my son’s life worth that gun?’
