Borussia Dortmund sporting director Sebastian Kehl has confirmed that new striker Sebastien Haller has been out for ‘several months’ after he began treatment for a testicular tumor.
The former West Ham striker and Ivory Coast international, 28, complained that he was not feeling well after training last Monday and an immediate medical examination discovered the tumor.
This means that Haller’s debut in Dortmund will be postponed due to the treatment after the shock diagnosis. An exact deadline has not been set for his return to action.
“Sebastien had surgery last week. We asked for patience at the time. The therapy is currently being discussed,” Kehl told reporters ahead of the first-round German Cup duel with 1860 Munich on Friday.
“Sebastien will be out for a few months, but as soon as we can be more precise about that, we will communicate that.”
A smiling Haller posted a photo from his hospital bed on Wednesday, tweeting: ‘Hello everyone, just wanted to let you know that Step 1 has been completed!
“I would like to thank the @BVB (Dortmund) and the medical team who have been exceptional for me.
‘A big thank you also to all the nursing staff at the hospital for their support – kindness.’
The Ivory Coast international came over from Ajax to Dortmund earlier this month for reportedly £27 million, making him the most expensive striker in the German club’s history. He signed a four-year contract with Dortmund after scoring 32 goals in 36 appearances in all competitions for Ajax last season.
