FRACKING should take place in rural Somerset, Jacob Rees-Mogg insisted yesterday, but rejected calls for local referendums to give consent.

The company secretary said he would be “delighted” to see the extraction of shale gas in its own backyard, and confirmed ministers would tear up rules to prescribe the maximum level of earthquakes.

the prime minister has insisted that there must be “local permission” for drilling – but has not said how this would be done.

Mr Rees-Mogg told a Telegraph fringe event he supported to give compensation or money to locals bills as part in exchange for green light.

He said: “I think people who are disturbed by the construction work should be compensated for that and that should be a payment to them.
