Jamie Carragher has made his predictions Euro 2024 and if he's right, that's not good news for Gareth Southgate and England…
Southgate has selected his provisional 33-man squad and despite some worrying injury problems, the Three Lions remain one of the favourites.
France, host country Germany, Portugal and Spain will also be strong contenders, but as history has shown us time and time again, anything can happen at a major tournament.
Former England and Liverpool defender Carragher is tipping Southgate's side to lead their group ahead of Denmark, Serbia and Slovenia before beating Austria in the last 16.
They will then beat Hungary in the quarter-finals, but will then face France in the semi-finals – a rematch of the 2022 World Cup, where England lost 2-1 in the quarter-finals with Harry Kane missing a late penalty.
'I don't see how England defeat France. I know it was very tight the last time they played and I always feel like they got exactly that [edge]Carragher told The Telegraph.
'We talk about Harry Kane scoring a penalty, the little details. [Jude] Bellingham is a game changer, two years on from the last tournament, playing for Real Madrid.
'What I would say is that the best team in England versus the best team in France is a coin toss. Some players who can't make the French team go on to win Champions Leagues and play for some of the biggest clubs in the world.
'Look at [William] Saliba, he rarely gets a chance. I think he would be our best central defender. I truly believe he would be an absolute shoe-in in the English team.
“They still have to bring in player after player after player. Can you imagine England losing Kane or Bellingham for that match?
'My only worry is that England will have to face France… come to think of it [Kylian] Mbappe, [Antoine] Griezmann, certainly two of the best in the world at the moment. I'm not sure we have defenders who can stop them.
'I'm going to make sure that France gets through it. I hope I'm wrong!'
Carragher predicts that Germany will join France in the final in Berlin on July 14 thanks to their home support, but cannot anticipate victory for Les Bleus.
“I keep coming back to the French squad and who they can bring off the bench and what they can change,” he added.
'I just think Germany are in the final because they are at home. I don't think I would ever put Germany in the final now if this tournament took place somewhere else. I'm looking at maybe Portugal I'm having a hard time in a stadium full of German supporters.
'France would have that problem in the final, but the experience they have, players who have won the World Cup and played in the final [another] last. I just think France has just enough to beat Germany in their own backyard.”
