Jasprit Bumrah set a Test world record after breaking 35 runs on a single by Stuart Broad at Edgbaston.

The stand-in India skipper came to the fold with his side in commanding position after centuries of middle-order batsmen Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja.

However, England would have at least been confident in keeping the tourists under 400 when they were 375-9 when number 11 Mohammed Siraj walked to the crease.

Broad’s tactic of throwing a barrage of bouncers at Bumrah backfired spectacularly when the India tailender continuously hoisted the English seam-bowler to the border with a series of unconventional hook-and-pull shots.

Bumrah’s teammates could hardly believe what they were seeing as Virat Kohli laughed uncontrollably in the locker room as Bumrah fell to his feet after a less than elegant pirouette.

The over culminated in chaotic fashion as Bumrah squeezed a fast single with Siraj who just made it to his ground, despite a wide full-length dive to break the stumps.

Bumrah’s extraordinary effort broke James Anderson’s 28 runs in 2013 when George Bailey hit him two sixes in Perth.

Brian Lara meanwhile also skipped 28 runs off Robin Pieterson in 2003.
