Former education secretary Jeremy Hunt warns to avoid cuts in education
Kit maltingthe former education secretary warned Jeremy Hunt that any cuts to school budgets will result in “disaster” for the UK.
As the chancellor prepares to make the fall statement, Malthouse told GB News: “Well, it’s certainly true that education is very tight. And schools are already grappling with rising energy costs, general inflation and the cost of living.
“And of course a 5% pay rise, which was given to teachers last year, not all of which were included in their budget statement. So it’s very tough and I have to say that I’ve seen some rather alarming things in the papers over the past few days indicating that the education budget may be cut.
“As far as I can tell, I don’t see how that can be acceptable. If you keep in mind that during the pandemic, children and their education were damaged the most, and we’re just kind of catching up, teachers across the country are working very hard to get kids back up to speed, the achievements are during the pandemic naturally decreased.
“To disrupt that dynamic just as this generation is back on their feet seems like a really, really, unacceptable thing to do.”
