Job Search: Think Smaller Cities for the Most Popular Jobs

When you think of technology in the US, do your thoughts go straight to Silicon Valley? We wouldn’t be surprised if that were the case. The California region is the world’s best-known name for technology and is the birthplace and home of many of the world’s largest technology companies. More than 30 Fortune 1000 companies are headquartered here, and it is also home to thousands of startup companies.

Outside of Silicon Valley, there are other established tech locations in the US, including Atlanta, Boston, and New York City, which has the largest tech workforce nationally, employing more than 670,000 people in the industry. In addition, New York state attracts the country’s second largest amount of venture capital, after California. Seattle also has a long history in technology and has been the home of Microsoft since 1979. Last year, Washington state took first place in the 2021 Global Startup Ecosystem report.

A recent Moody’s Analytics survey assessed 300 metropolitan areas on factors such as the unemployment rate, employment rate (as well as labor growth), and job and wage growth in each area. The results found that job markets are most popular in medium-sized cities with populations of less than 2.3 million, which have relatively low income taxes (if at all) and climates that allow for year-round outdoor pursuits.

So if you’re looking for a new role, where should you look? The research highlighted Austin, Texas; Nashville, Tennessee; Salt Lake City, Utah; Jacksonville, Florida and Raleigh, North Carolina. We’ve got three to check out below – and many more to discover on the VentureBeat Job Board.
