Joe Turkel, an actor who starred in several Stanley Kubrick films, including The Shining, has died aged 94.

The actor, who has amassed more than 100 acting credits during his career, died Monday at St. John’s Hospital in Santa Monica.

He leaves behind a brother, David Turkel, two sons and two daughters-in-law.

In a statement to People, Chris Carbaugh, a representative for the star, said: “Joe was a thunderbolt and he was very passionate about talking about movies, baseball and life. Every time we spoke, he was quick to make a bad joke and make me laugh.’

Turkel was best known for his performance as a bartender named Lloyd in The Shining, in which he co-starred with star Jack Nicholson.

He also portrayed Eldon Tyrell in 1982’s Blade Runner, and later lent his voice to a video game spin-off of the film in 1997.

Turkel had a long career spanning four decades, starring in such films as The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre, King Rat, The Sand Pebbles, and The Dark Side of the Moon.

In collaboration with director Bert I. Gordon, he also appeared in Tormented, The Boy and the Pirates and Village of the Giants.

His TV credits saw him in such famous titles as SWAT, The Andy Griffith Show, Miami Vice and The Lone Ranger, among others.

The Hollywood veteran was born in Brooklyn, New York on July 15, 1927.

At age 17, he joined the United States Army and served abroad during World War II.

He then moved to California, where he landed his first role in 1948’s City Across the River.

His family plans to release his completed memoir The Misery of Success later this year, Variety reported.
