Matip was one of them Jurgen Klopp's first signing when he arrived as a free agent after a spell at Schalke 04.

And he played a key role under the German in securing a number of trophies for the club over the next eight seasons.

Matip helped Liverpool to end their three-decade wait to become champions when they won the Premier League in 2020 – twelve months after winning the Champions League.

But the Cameroon international suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Fulham in December, which has kept him sidelined ever since.

However, he is high on the list of one of the Premier League rivals Bournemouth after it was announced that he was leaving Liverpool as a free agent once his contract expires next month.

Andoni Iraola has identified the player as a top transfer target and believes he can help take his Cherries side to the next level.

In the meantime Southampton – who face Leeds in the Championship play-off final at Wembley looking for a place back in the Premier League this weekend – keeping an eye on Matip too.

And they will hope to convince him to sign if Russell Martin can lead his team to an immediate return to the top flight on Sunday.

JURGEN KLOPP ON JOEL MATIP

Here's what the outgoing Liverpool boss had to say about the defender:

“In all the years I have been involved in football, I am not sure I have come across too many players more loved than Joel Matip.

“I'm not even sure it would be possible to say anything bad about him.

“A great professional, a great footballer and a great human being – we are blessed to have had him with us for so long and all we can do now is wish him the best as he sets out in a new direction.

“Joel's qualities as a player are visible to everyone and as a club we have benefited from this from the first moment he joined. I don't think he's had too many headlines over the years, but he's always been a very famous figure within our group.

“I've said before that if there was one person who wouldn't mind being underestimated it would be Joel, but the truth is we couldn't have rated him any higher.

“He has set standards not only for himself but for others and this is one of the main reasons why his time here has been so successful.”
